Costs

Bronze Line Elements

There are two main costs to implementation of the Bronze line.

  • A fleet of modern, single-floor EMU trains. 10-11 trains with 7 cars each would cost 250-500 million dollars.

  • A new or upgraded maintenance facility. Another 100-200 million.

A total of 350-700 million dollars. A significant investment, but Maryland is already planning to invest hundreds of millions recapitalizing the Penn Line fleet as part of the MARC growth and transformation plan. The Bronze line project could be completed within the $800 million planned for 5-year capital investments for MARC.

Penn line fleet recapitalization should be reconfigured to support the new bronze line EMU fleet.

Comparable Projects

The Bronze line costs will be an order of magnitude less than a new-build metro line. By using existing infrastructure we can deliver metro level service for costs more in line with bus rapid transit.

  • Purple line light rail - $9.3 billion (includes 30 years of operations and maintenance)

  • WMATA Silver Line - $5.7 billion

  • Transforming Rail VA regional rail upgrades - $3.9 billion

  • Baltimore Red Line - $4.7-9 billion

  • MD 355 Flash BRT bus - $450 million
